I love Kathleen

Thanks for the treats, Aunt Kathleen. Who's Sean?

Thanks for the treats, Aunt Kathleen. Who's Sean?

My sister Kathleen got into town Sunday night, and my dogs are thrilled. She always brings all kinds of great treats with her, and showers Chopper and Kaley with love and affection. I think she’s trying to steal them from me, so her Jack Russell Terrier named Stella can have some nice playmates. But maybe that’s just paranoia talking.

Kathleen treats me pretty well, too. She won’t let me lift a finger to do anything the whole time she’s here. She likes to cook, clean, tidy up and reorganize stuff. The house always looks way better when she leaves than it did when she got here. And I usually feel better, too. Just now, she brought me a smoothie. Tonight she’s making grilled salmon for dinner.

She is called Kathleen only by her siblings and our friends — because that was her name in our household growing up. (My Dad had a thing about full Irish names for all the kids.) Everyone else in her world knows her as ‘Kathy’, including her husband Richie.

She has a way of making me feel good about what I get done any given day, even if I don’t do much. On Monday, for example, I was really exhausted after the radiation treatment and basically slept away the afternoon. Meanwhile, Kathleen went out to run a lot of errands. She’s getting to know her way around Orlando really well. Today, she decoded the mysteries of Bumby Street and Lake Como circle. All by herself.

Of course, if she had no choice but to walk barefoot through a field of molten lava to get to a Bed, Bath & Beyond store, she would have done that too. So Bumby street really never stood a chance.

Anyway, when she got home I told her how bad I felt being sprawled out on the sofa and not doing anything while she was out running around and doing all this stuff. She looked at me in shock when I said that.

“What do you mean you didn’t do anything?” she asked. “You SLEPT? That’s VERY important right now.”

I love Kathleen. Do you wonder why?

Kathleen is one of the warmest most compassionate people I’ve met. If I get sick, I want a Kathleen to watch over me.

The best thing, Sean, is that you know enough to appreciate her.

    Holt-line,
Kathleen is doing what your Mom would do if she were here. That’s why it feels so good. There is nothing in the world like mothering. Chopper and Kaley clearly understand this concept as well. Now make sure you attend to the important business of napping today.

Kathleen is very wise. Naps are not an indulgence nor even a guilty pleasure when you’re sick. Naps are a necessity. And on that note…zzzz

You must sleep sometime between lunch and dinner, and no halfway measures. Take off your clothes and get into bed. That’s what I always do. Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the day. That’s a foolish notion held by people who have no imaginations. You will be able to accomplish more. You get two days in one — well, at least one and a half.”

Kathleen is one of the most nurturing people I have ever known. She cared for me after I had a car accident in Chicago years ago and also during my pregnancy when I was on bedrest. She also excelled in comforting me during the delivery of Timothy. She simply is one of he most soothing and calming people I know. You”re right Sean, no matter what you do Kathleen makes you feel like you have accomplished so very much(no matter how little you’ve actually done). I am so happy to know she is down there caring for your every need as she is so good at that! I Love kathleen too! Just make sure Chopper and Kaley don’t get to attached.

Hi Sean, from another “Kathleen” to family and childhood friends! I see now why your dad always referred to you as The Scribe! Have been following your blog with great interest, and seeing the pictures of your folks is especially poignant, they were among our best friends. We are both (John Richard and I) thinking only positive, good thoughts for you. Let your Kathleen cluck over you like a mother hen, that is how Lucille raised her.

You obviously have exceptionally good taste in sisters. You were wise to pick such a wonderful model. And she is absolutely right. Sleep right now is very very important.

In regard to TLC,Kathleen wrote the book. But her love radiates toward everyone, all the time. As her first spoiled little brother i have first-hand knowledge as recipient & witness. Think Chopper & Kaylee would bark ageeably to this fact of living in her world.

[…] you wouldn’t think a guy with a big sister as wonderful as  Kathleen and big brothers as great as Tim and Brian could ever hope to have a little sister as cool as […]

    Sean,
I’m just getting caught up on the blog with “I Love Ellen” and “I Love Kathleen.” Yes, I’ve always known her as Kathleen. She’s one of the coolest, kindest ladies on the planet. She was so comforting to our family after our mom died in 1986. She looked awesome in her leather pants. Recently, I was reading the annual report for St. Teresa’s Academy. It included a list of all the academy women (top senior, only one per year) for every year since 1949, the year the award began. In 1965, the academy woman was KATHLEEN HOLTON KAPLAN. Sean, you mocked me, by saying, “Patty, you don’t remember that?” Of course, I was only 4 then!

Anyway, I’m happy she could be there with you. What wonderful sisters, brothers, and sisters-in-law you have!
    Love,
    Patty
